How a Louisiana university built a football legacy from scratch in 1972
In short: Since fielding their first team in 1972, the Nicholls Colonels have evolved from a new program into a consistent Southland Conference powerhouse. From championship runs under various coaches to hosting the Manning family's passing academy, the program's growth is etched into the landscape of Thibodaux, Louisiana.
The Nicholls Colonels football program, based at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, began its competitive journey in 1972. Since those inaugural years, the team has navigated various divisional shifts, competing in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Southland Conference. Home contests take place within Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium, which accommodates 10,500 spectators. This venue serves as a primary centre for achieving regional football success.
The program's history is marked by several significant championship eras. In 1975, under head coach Bill Clements, the team secured the Gulf South Conference (Division II) title with an 8–2 record. They achieved further success in 1984, winning the Gulf Star Conference (Division I-AA) with a 6–5 record under Sonny Jackson. More recently, the Colonels have seen a surge in dominance under coach Tim Rebowe, securing Southland Conference championships in 2018, 2019, and 2023.
The infrastructure supporting the team has expanded alongside its success. While the Frank L. Barker Athletic Building served as the primary hub from 1972 until 2019, a new $6.5 million football operations center was announced in June 2019. This facility, spanning 20,000 square feet, was designed to enhance the program's capabilities. The stadium's playing surface, Manning Field, is named after the Manning family—Peyton, Eli, Cooper, and Archie—due to their annual Manning Passing Academy held at the site.
Beyond local rivalries, such as the annual battle for the River Bell Trophy against Southeastern Louisiana, the Colonels have made several appearances on the national stage. The programme has reached the Division I-AA/FCS playoffs on seven occasions, holding a 3–7 postseason tally.
