How a second-round draft pick became the anchor of a championship dynasty
In short: In the high-stakes arena of the NFL, few players transition from college standout to defensive cornerstone as rapidly as Nick Bolton. From his prolific years with the Missouri Tigers to securing back-to-back Super Bowl titles, his career is a masterclass in defensive impact and opportunistic play.
Nick Bolton’s ascent began at the University of Missouri, where he established himself as an elite force in the Southeastern Conference. After a promising 2018 freshman campaign involving 22 tackles, his sophomore year in 2019 saw him earn first-team All-SEC honors following a 103-tackle season. He maintained this momentum through a shortened 2020 season, earning his second consecutive first-team All-SEC selection and receiving second-team All-American honors from the Associated Press.
The Kansas City Chiefs identified his potential during the 202<0xC2>1 NFL draft, selecting him in the second round as the 58th overall pick. This selection was made possible by a trade involving the 31st overall pick, which the Chiefs had acquired alongside Orlando Brown Jr. in a deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Bolton officially joined the roster on May 13, 2021, signing a $5.84 million contract. His rookie season was marked by immediate defensive utility, including an 86-yard fumble return for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos.
Bolton’s impact on the Chiefs' championship era is quantifiable through his statistical dominance. In 2022, he recorded 180 total tackles, finishing second in the NFL in both combined and solo tackles. He played a pivotal role in Super Bowl LVII, leading both teams with nine tackles and returning a Jalen Hurts fumble for a touchdown. He followed this with a 13-tackle performance in Super Bowl LVIII. Despite a Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Bolton's reliability has secured his future; on March 14, 2025, he signed a massive three-year, $45 million contract extension.
