How an undrafted quarterback shattered records held by an NFL legend
In short: Nick Mullens arrived in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, yet he spent his collegiate career rewriting the history books at Southern Miss. By eclipsing the passing records of school icon Brett Favre, Mullens proved that path to the professional level is rarely a straight line for the game's most persistent.
Born in 1995 in Little Rock, Arkansas, Nick Mullens grew up in Hoover, Alabama, where he excelled as a high school quarterback. His path to college football was unconventional; he initially committed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham before switching to the University of Southern Mississippi on national signing day. His arrival at Southern Miss coincided with a difficult period for the program, which was mired in a 23-game losing streak. Mullens was thrust into the starting role as a true freshman in 2013, eventually helping the team snap that streak with a five-touchdown performance against his original college choice, UAB.
Mullens' collegiate career was defined by prolific production. By the time he graduated, he held the school's career records in every major passing category. His 11,994 passing yards and 87 touchdowns significantly surpassed the 7,695 yards and 52 touchdowns recorded by Brett Favre during his own tenure at Southern Miss. In 2015, Mullens threw for 4,476 yards and 38 touchdowns, leading the Golden Eagles to a 9–5 record and marking a major turnaround for the program. He even set a single-game collegiate career high of 591 passing yards against Rice in 2016.
Despite these collegiate accolades, Mullens went undrafted in 2017. His professional journey has been marked by resilience, characterized by stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, and Jacksonville Jaguars. His 2018 NFL debut with the 49ers was historic; he posted a 151.9 passer rating, the highest for a debut with at least 20 attempts since 1970. Throughout his career, Mullens has frequently stepped into starting roles due to injuries to primary quarterbacks, demonstrating a consistent ability to perform under pressure despite the constant movement between rosters and practice squads.
