In short: From a Greek immigrant to one of Australia's most influential sporting figures, Nick Politis changed the business of rugby league. He pioneered jersey sponsorships and built a massive automotive empire, proving that high-stakes commerce and professional sport are inextricably linked.

Born in Kytheral, Greece, in 1944, Nicholas George Politis moved to Australia with his family in the late 1940s. After settling in Queensland towns like Ipswich and Blackall, he graduated from the University of Queensland in 1964. His business trajectory took a significant turn in March 1974, when he began expanding WFM Motors Pty Ltd, eventually rebranding it as City Ford and creating one of Australia's largest Ford dealerships.

Politis's influence extends far beyond the showroom. Since May 30, 1993, he has served as the chairman of the Sydney Roosters. In 1976, he established a significant milestone by launching the inaugural jersey sponsor for a professional rugby league club. His tenure has been marked by both immense success and significant controversy. While he oversaw the Roosters' 2002 NRL Grand Final win and back-to-back premierships in 2018 and 2019, his leadership in the healthcare sector saw the 'celebrated' LaTrobe Regional Hospital fiasco, where contract management failures led to losses of tens of millions.

Known by nicknames such as 'The Godfather' or 'Uncle Nick,' Politis is a formidable figure in Australian industry. His financial scale is vast; in 2014, his NGP Investments (No.2) acquired Barloworld's Australian car sales business for $130 million. While his 2010 net worth was estimated at A$182 million, by May 2025, his wealth was assessed at A$2.58 billion. His impact on the sport is perhaps best seen in his role in bringing Sonny Bill Williams back to the NRL in 2013, a move widely credited to a handshake agreement orchestrated by Politis.
