Alex Collins: From SEC standout to a resilient career in the NFL and USFL
In short: Before his life was tragically cut short in 2023, Alex Collins carved a path through professional football defined by grit and adaptability. From a dramatic college recruitment to becoming a featured NFL running back, Collins navigated the highs of league stardom and the lows of injury and personal setbacks.
Born in Fort Lauderdale in 1994, Alex Collins was a multi-sport athlete who excelled at South Plantation High School. His transition to the University of Arkansas was marked by a bizarre recruiting saga; on signing day, his mother famously absconded with his National Letter of Intent, hoping to keep him closer to home. The situation was resolved the following day when his father signed a new document faxed by head coach Bret Bielema. Once on campus, Collins quickly established himself as a force, becoming the first true freshman in SEC history to rush for 300 yards across his first three games.
Collins’s collegiate career culminated in a stellar junior season in 2015, where he rushed for 1,577 yards and a school-record 20 touchdowns. He became only the third player in SEC history to record three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons, joining legends Herschel Walker and Darren McFadden. After declaring for the 2016 NFL Draft, he was selected in the fifth round by the Seattle Seahawks. While his rookie season was modest, he found his stride after being waived and signed by the Baltimore Ravens in 2017, where he led the team with 973 rushing yards that year.
His professional journey was not without turbulence. Following a 2019 arrest and subsequent NFL suspension, Collins worked his way back into the league, returning to the Seahawks in 2020. He eventually transitioned to the USFL, signing with the Memphis Showboats in early 2023. Tragically, his career and life ended on August 13, 2023, following a high-speed motorcycle collision in Florida. Despite the challenges he faced, Collins left a lasting mark on the programs he played for, remembered for his unique running style and his ability to overcome adversity on and off the field.
