In short: From a 6–1 debut defeat in 1958 to high-scoring victories in modern tournaments, Guinea's footballing journey is defined by narrow misses and unexpected triumphs. Despite never qualifying for a FIFA World Cup, the team has consistently challenged the continent's giants through decades of intense competition.

The history of the Guinea national football team is a narrative of near-misses and administrative hurdles. Their international journey began on 6 December 1958, with a heavy 6–1 loss to Ghana. However, they quickly proved their competitive spirit during the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. After a hard-fought aggregate victory over Nigeria, Guinea was controversially disqualified for using Guinean officials during a match, allowing Nigeria to advance instead.

The team's greatest continental achievement came in 1976, when they reached the Africa Cup of Nations final. They finished as runners-up to Morocco, missing the championship title by just a single point. This era established Guinea as a formidable force, a reputation they maintained through various periods, including a streak of three consecutive quarter-final appearances in 2004, 2006, and 2008.

The squad has also faced significant external pressures. In 2001, FIFA expelled the nation from the 2002 World Cup and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers due to government interference in football. After a two-year ban, they returned to action in September 2002. More recently, the team faced logistical challenges when CAF lifted a ban on home matches in January 2016, following the U.N. World Health Organization's declaration that Guinea was free of Ebola in December 2015.

Despite these setbacks, Guinea has demonstrated explosive offensive potential, such as their 6–1 victory over Botswana in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations—the first time a team scored six goals in a single game in the tournament since 1970.
