In short: Released in 1988, Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking was so provocative that nine major record chains refused to stock it. From a heated royalty dispute that nearly broke the band to its iconic, dream-inspired cover art, this album remains a cornerstone of the 1980s alternative scene.

Nothing's Shocking arrived on August 23, 1988, through Warner Bros. Records, marking a pivotal moment for the Los Angeles-based band. While the album eventually achieved platinum certification by the RIAA—representing one million copies shipped in the US—its initial success was tempered by censorship and internal friction. Because of its controversial imagery, nine out of eleven major record retailers declined to stock the album, necessitating that many copies be sold inside brown paper wraps.

The recording process was fraught with tension, specifically regarding songwriting royalties. Frontman Perry Farrell demanded 62.5% of the publishing royalties, leaving the other members—bassist Eric Avery, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins—with only 12.5% each. This dispute caused a temporary breakup and a profound internal fracture within the group. The tension was compounded by personal fallouts between Farrell and Avery, driven by Avery's newfound sobriety and a personal disagreement involving Farrell's girlfriend, Casey Niccoli, who assisted with the album's artwork.

Despite these struggles, the album became a critical landmark. It peaked at number 103 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental, losing to Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave. Critics have since hailed it as one of the greatest albums of the 1980s, with Rolling Stone ranking it at number 312 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It is frequently cited as a foundational work of the alternative rock genre.
