In short: The Notre Dame-USC rivalry is a cornerstone of college football, but its origins are shrouded in legend. While official records point to a 1926 agreement, the true catalyst may have been a simple preference for sunny California over the freezing, snowy winters of Nebraska during the Thanksgiving holiday season.

The traditional narrative suggests the rivalry was born from a 1926 meeting between Bonnie Rockne, wife of Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne, and Marion Wilson, wife of USC athletic director Gwynn Wilson. USC was actively seeking a national rival and sent the Wilsons to Nebraska to lobby Rockne during a Notre Dame game. Although Rockne initially resisted the idea due to the grueling travel requirements, Marion Wilson reportedly convinced Bonnie that a biennial trip to Southern California was far more appealing than the harsh Nebraska climate. Following this, the rivalry was made official on December 4, 1926.

However, historical analysis offers a more pragmatic perspective. Historian Murray Sperber suggests the series was driven by financial and political imperatives rather than just social persuasion. During the 1920s, institutions like the Big Ten were attempting to curb the rising commercialism in college athletics, which was fueled by large payouts from long-distance travel and bowl games. Some evidence indicates that Rockne’s supposed reluctance was overstated, and the series was a strategic move to expand the reach of both programs during an era of rapid growth for the sport.

Regardless of its exact origin, the rivalry quickly became a spectacle. By 1927, the teams drew roughly 120,000 spectators at Chicago’s Soldier Field, marking the largest audience in NCAA history at the time. The intensity is now cemented by the Jeweled Shillelagh, a trophy introduced in 1952. The original, retired in 1995, featured emerald-studded shamrocks for Notre Dame wins and ruby-adorned Trojan heads for USC victories. Today, the two programs remain among the most successful in the sport, with a combined 22 national championships and 15 Heisman Trophies, ensuring that their annual meeting remains a high-stakes clash of national prestige.
