From video game designer to 'Rowdy CM' in a political thriller
In short: What happens when a man with zero political experience is thrust into the highest office of the land? In the 2018 film NOTA, a video game designer must navigate corruption, riots, and a father's dark legacy to find his own voice of leadership.
Adapted from the novel Vettattam by Shan Karuppusamy, NOTA follows Varun Subramanyam, a UK-based video game designer who unexpectedly becomes the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. His father, Vinodhan, is ousted due to corruption charges, leaving Varun to manage the state with no prior experience. The narrative balances high-stakes political drama with personal intrigue, including a mystery over whether Varun is actually Vinodhan's biological son, a question clouded by a tragic incident involving Varun's mother years prior.
The film serves as a critique of contemporary governance, incorporating parodies of real-world events like the 2015 South Indian floods and the practice of hospitalizing officials in resorts. Varun's journey is marked by significant hurdles: he faces public mockery as a 'Dummy CM,' navigates a city in riot, and must manage a crisis involving a dam release. A key turning point occurs when he successfully manages the dam opening to save lives, shifting his reputation to that of the 'Rowdy CM.'
Production was marked by unique challenges, including a filming standoff between the Nadigar Sangam and digital service providers over virtual print fees. Sam joined forces with the Macedonian Symphony Orchestra, involving 150 live performers, to provide 'The Rise Of A Leader' theme song its epic scope. While critics were divided on the film's emotional depth and cinematic clichés, many praised Vijay Deverakonda's performance and the film's relevance to current political realities.
