A debt of honor: Why Notre Dame still plays Navy
In short: Most college rivalries are fueled by proximity or conference standings. But the Notre Dame and Navy series is built on a literal debt of honor. During World War II, the US Navy saved the university from financial ruin, creating a bond that transcends the scoreboard and remains a sacred tradition.
The relationship between the University of Notre Dame and the US Navy is rooted in a period of extreme crisis. During World War II, Notre Dame faced severe financial difficulties. To keep the university afloat, the US Navy designated Notre Dame as a training center, paying for the use of its facilities. This act of support transformed the football series into a 'debt of honor,' with Notre Dame extending an open invitation for Navy to play annually as a form of repayment.
The longevity of this connection is staggering. From 1927 until 2019, the Navy–Notre Dame matchup occurred every year, establishing a record for the most continuous annual intersectional series in the history of college football. Although Notre Dame maintained a 43-game winning streak—the most extensive series win run against a yearly rival in Division I FBS history—the rivalry is characterised by shared esteem. This bond is shown through a 2005 custom where both squads remain at attention while the opposing school's alma mater is performed following the contest.
Despite the lopsided scores of the late 20th century, the rivalry remains a priority for the Irish. In 2014, head coach Brian Kelly famously labeled the loss of the Navy game as a 'deal-breaker' when asked if the school should move to an all-Power Five schedule. The series continues to be a 'home and home' arrangement, though due to the small size of the stadium in Annapolis, Navy typically hosts in larger venues like M&T Bank Stadium or at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.
