A century of West Coast dominance redefined by a move east
In short: The Oregon–USC rivalry is a masterclass in how sports history survives institutional upheaval. Despite moving from the Pacific Coast Conference to the Pac-12 and finally into the Big Ten, this feud remains one of college football's most enduring tests of regional identity.
The rivalry began with a 34–0 victory for Oregon (then known as the 'Webfoots') over USC in their first meeting. However, that early dominance was short-lived; the Trojans responded by winning the next eight consecutive matchups until a tie in 1939. For most of the 20th century, these schools were defined by their proximity on the West Coast, competing as members of the Pacific Coast Conference from 1922 to 1958 and later the Pac-12 for over sixty years.
The relationship has been marked by high-stakes drama and physical controversy. In 1985, a matchup in Tokyo, Japan, saw USC win despite a violent hit on Oregon quarterback Chris Miller that drew a personal foul. More recently, a 2026 showdown at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum sparked national outrage when USC linebacker Desman Stephens II was ejected for a late hit on Oregon's Dante Moore. The incident became a flashpoint for debate over player safety and disciplinary leniency in the sport.
The rivalry is currently undergoing a structural metamorphosis. In 2023, both schools announced their move to the Big Ten Conference, making them 'unconventional rivals' who share deep familiarity with one another while facing new opponents. The Big Ten officially recognized this as a premier rivalry series in September 2025. Now spanning 868 miles from Eugene to Los Angeles, the feud serves as a bridge between two eras of college football: the legacy of the Pac-12 and the expansion of the Big Ten.
