From the Alaskan wilderness to the heights of La Liga
In short: Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Obed Vargas has navigated a meteoric rise through professional football. After making an MLS debut at just 15, the midfielder bypassed traditional paths to sign with Atlético Madrid, eventually representing Mexico on the world stage and becoming the first Alaskan to play for a national team.
Obed Vargas's journey is a testament to rapid professional ascent. After playing for the Cook Inlet Soccer Club in Alaska, he moved to Washington at age 14 to join the Seattle Sounders FC academy. His professional career began with a contract for the Tacoma Defiance in May 2021, followed just two days later by a senior debut in the USL Championship against LA Galaxy II.
By July 22, 2021, at 15 years and 351 days old, Vargas became the third-youngest player in MLS history during a match against Austin FC. Despite setbacks, including a stress fracture in his back that sidelined him in late 2021, he became a cornerstone for the Sounders. His 2025 season was particularly prolific, where he started 26 matches and was ranked first in the MLS 22 Under 22 list.
The midfielder's international trajectory involved a significant decision: after being called up to various United States youth levels, he completed a one-time switch to Mexico on May 21, 2024. This decision led to his senior Mexico debut on October 15, 2024, in a 2–0 friendly victory over the United States. His talent eventually caught the eye of European giants, leading to a four-and-a-half-year contract with Atlético Madrid in February 2026.
Vargas's heritage and family ties are deeply rooted in football; his parents hail from Michoacán, and his father played for the Monarcas Morelia youth academy. As he enters the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he stands as a historic figure for Alaskan athletes, having broken through the ranks of American soccer to reach the pinnacle of the Spanish league.
