From a Quaker cabin to the home of the Buffalo Bills
In short: Long before it became a premier suburb of Buffalo, Orchard Park was a frontier settlement. What began with a single cabin in 1803 has evolved into a significant New York township, hosting major NFL venues and a rich tapestry of local history and community traditions.
The foundations of Orchard Park were laid in 1803 when Didymus C. Kinney and his wife, Phebe Hartwell Kinney, built a cabin in the township's southwest corner. This original structure has since been preserved as a museum. The following year, a wave of Quaker settlers arrived, establishing a community that would shape the town's identity for centuries.
The town's administrative history is a series of transformations. It was officially separated from the town of Hamburg in 1850. Initially, it was named "Ellicott" after Joseph Ellicott, an agent for the Holland Land Company. However, the name was changed to "East Hamburgh" within months. It wasn't until March 1, 1934, that the community adopted its current name, Orchard Park, after its primary settlement.
Today, the town is a vital part of Erie County's Southtowns, boasting a population of 29,686 as of the 2020 census. It is most widely recognized as the site of Highmark Stadium, located in the hamlet of Windom, which serves as the home field for the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Beyond sports, the area is home to Chestnut Ridge Park, the largest park in Erie County, and features historic sites like the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad Station, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The community maintains deep cultural roots through long-standing traditions. This includes the Orchard Park Symphony Orchestra, which has performed since 1949, and the annual Festival of the Arts, which traces its origins back to the 1960s as the Quaker Arts Festival.
