The journeyman midfielder who navigated the highs and lows of European football
In short: From the prestigious Barcelona academy to the Japanese J1 League, Oriol Romeu’s career has been a whirlwind of transfers, injuries, and unexpected returns. Discover the story of a defensive specialist who found success across Spain, England, and Germany, proving that a footballing journey is rarely a straight line.
Born in Ulldecona in 1991, Romeu’s professional ascent began under the guidance of Pep Guardiola at Barcelona. Having risen via the academy, his first senior outing occurred in 2009 versus Kazma SC, followed by a selection for Abu Dhabi's 2009 FIFA Club World Cup. His early years were marked by international success, including winning the 2008 UEFA Under-17 Championship with Spain.
A pivotal moment arrived in August 2011, when Chelsea secured his services for €5 million. While initial reports suggested Barcelona held a significant buy-back option, Chelsea later clarified in December 2011 that the Spanish club merely possessed the right of first refusal. His time in London was a mixture of highlights, such as his first Champions League appearance against Genk, and setbacks, including a knee injury in late 2012 that ended his season prematurely.
Romeu’s career is defined by a series of notable transitions. He moved to Southampton in 2015 for £5 million, where he became a standout performer, earning the club's Player of the Season award for the 2016–17 campaign. Following stints at Girona and a return to Barcelona in 2023, his path has continued to evolve, leading him through various loan spells and eventually to Avispa Fukuoka in 2026. Beyond the pitch, the midfielder has even explored the literary side of the sport, authoring a memoir about his internal experiences as a professional athlete.
