How a medical substitute became a key forward for Carlton
In short: Oscar McDonald's career has been defined by tactical shifts and physical resilience. After playing primarily as a defender for Melbourne, he transitioned to a key forward role at Carlton, notably becoming the first player ever to be used under the AFL's medical substitute rule.
Born on 18 March 1996, Oscar McDonald's journey through the Australian Football League has been marked by significant positional changes and injury setbacks. Originally drafted by Melbourne in 2014 with the fifth selection and fifty-third overall, he spent much of his early career as a defender. During his time at Melbourne, he played alongside his brother, Tom, and earned a nomination for the AFL Rising Star in 2016 after a standout performance against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
His tenure at Melbourne lasted six seasons before he was delisted following the 2020 season. This led to a period of transition where he trained with Carlton ahead of the 2021 season. Under coach David Teague, his role was transformed from a defender to a key forward. In Round 1, he achieved a historic milestone by becoming the inaugural player introduced via the AFL's newly implemented 'medical substitute' regulation during that period.
Despite this successful tactical shift—kicking two goals in that debut game—his time at Carlton was hampered by injuries, including stress fractures in his back that sidelined him for much of 2022. After being delisted by the Blues, McDonald signed with the Fremantle Dockers as a delisted free agent in November 2023. He has since returned to his defensive roots, playing as a key defender for Fremantle, though his 2024 season was cut short by a knee injury sustained at Optus Stadium.
