How a sudden growth spurt transformed Oscar Allen's football career
In short: At 16, Oscar Allen grew 10 cm, shifting his trajectory from a small defender to a key-position powerhouse. This physical transformation paved the way for a decorated AFL career, leading from a Rising Star nomination to a Grand Final victory with the Brisbane Lions.
Born in Perth, Western Australia, on 19 March 1999, Allen’s footballing identity was reshaped by a significant growth spurt during his teenage years. Before this 10 cm increase in height, he played as a small defender. However, the change allowed him to transition into roles such as centre-half forward, ruckman, and centre half-back during his time with the West Perth Football Club.
His talent was recognized early; in 2017, he co-captained the Western Australia Under 18 side and won the Larke Medal after scoring 11 goals in four games. This performance led to him being selected by the West Coast Eagles with pick 21 in the 2017 national draft, despite earlier speculation that he might be taken at pick 13.
Allen's career has been marked by both high-level achievement and physical setbacks. After a breakout 2023 season where he kicked 53 goals and finished runner-up for the Club Champion Award, he was named co-captain of the Eagles in November 2023. However, injury troubles followed, including a tibia stress fracture upon arriving at West Coast and a series of knee, calf, and Achilles issues in 2025.
Following his decision to become a restricted free agent in August 2025, Allen joined the Brisbane Lions for the 2026 season. Despite suffering a foot fracture in April 2026, he returned to the side to contribute to the Lions' 2026 AFL Grand Final victory, kicking two goals in the decisive win.
