From Valencia's youth ranks to a Bundesliga record-breaking substitute
In short: Paco Alcácer's career is defined by remarkable efficiency and resilience. After a devastating personal loss in 2011, the Spanish striker rose through the Valencia academy to secure a €30 million move to Barcelona and eventually set a Bundesliga record for goals scored from the bench.
Born in Torrent on 30 August 1993, Alcácer's journey through the Valencia youth system was marked by both early success and profound tragedy. In 2011, while leaving the Mestalla Stadium after a friendly against Roma, his father suffered a fatal heart attack. In a display of immense mental strength, Alcácer returned to training less than a week later and played a reserve fixture just three days after the event. He had already made his senior professional debut at age 16 during the 2009–10 season. During that initial campaign, he netted three goals for the reserve side.
His clinical finishing eventually earned him a €30 million transfer to Barcelona in 2016. While often serving as a reserve to stars like Luis Suárez, he contributed to major successes, including winning the 2017–18 La Liga title and two Copa del Rey trophies. His ability to impact games from the bench became a hallmark of his career, particularly during his time in Germany.
While on loan at Borussia Dortmund during the 2018–19 season, Alcácer achieved a Bundesliga record by scoring ten goals as a substitute in a single campaign. This prolific spell led Dortmund to exercise a €23 million buyout option in February 2019. His career later saw him win the UEFA Europa League with Villarreal in 2021 before he moved to the UAE to play for Sharjah, eventually announcing his retirement in March 2026 at age 32. He also secured the DFL-Supercup title with Dortmund in 2019. His final professional years included a stint with Emirates Club in the UAE.
