Pakistan's 2010 Asian Games: A historic return to hockey glory
In short: In 2010, Pakistan reclaimed its status as a powerhouse of field hockey, securing a gold medal that ended a two-decade drought. Beyond the podium, the games were marked by unexpected logistical shifts and a last-minute rescue mission for the nation's football squad.
Pakistan's performance at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, was defined by a significant milestone in field hockey. The men's team captured the gold medal, marking the country's eighth overall title in the competition. This victory was particularly poignant as it represented the first time Pakistan had won an Asian Games gold in field hockey in 20 years, and their first major title in the sport since their 1994 World Cup victory in Sydney, Australia.
The games also served as a debut for several sports. Pakistan secured gold medals in the inaugural events of women's cricket and men's team squash. Additionally, the baseball team earned its spot in the competition by winning the Asia Cup qualifiers held in Islamabad earlier that same year. The nation's athletic representation was diverse, featuring both men's and women's teams across various disciplines.
Behind the scenes, the games were shaped by logistical hurdles and private patronage. A notable shift occurred during the opening ceremony when the original flag bearer, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Azhar Hussain, had to be replaced by field hockey captain Zeeshan Ashraf due to training schedule conflicts. Furthermore, Pakistan's football team only participated because the President of the Pakistan Football Federation, Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat, committed to personally covering the team's expenses.
The football team was initially excluded from the games until this private funding was secured. Once confirmed, the 16-member squad, which included the return of Sohail Abbas and Salman Akbar, underwent a training camp in Lahore starting on 24 October. The team was eventually placed in Group F alongside Oman, Thailand, and the Maldives.
