In short: Born from the union of two local sides, Panserraikos F.C. has survived decades of dramatic shifts. From top-flight dominance in the 1960s to near-collapse due to financial mismanagement, the Serres-based club's history is a rollercoaster of historic cup upsets and sudden relegations.

Founded in 1946 through the merger of Apollon and Iraklis, Panserraikos F.C. established itself as a significant force in northern Greece. The club's identity was forged through its red and white colors and the Lion of Amphipolis, an emblem representing the warlike virtues of the Serrai people. Early success was immediate; the newly formed club secured promotion to the Alpha Ethniki by finishing first, holding an 11-point lead over the second-place MENT.

The club enjoyed a near-continuous presence in the First Division throughout the 1960s and 1970s, reaching a peak league position of 8th in both the 1969–1970 and 1980–1981 seasons. One of their most storied moments occurred on 4 March 2009, when a depleted Panserraikos squad secured a historic 3–2 victory against Panathinaikos in the Greek Cup quarterfinals, marking their first appearance in the tournament's semifinals.

However, the club's journey has been marked by significant instability. Following a relegation in 1992, the team struggled in the Beta Ethniki, suffering two relegations to the Third Division in 1993 and 1996. The club dropped to the amateur 3rd Greek Division following a 2012–13 fiscal meltdown, caused by chairman Petros Theodoridis's passing and Lazaros Theodoridis's unsuccessful bid to transfer ownership to Russian financier Konstantin Vostrikov. This downfall was attributed to the mismanagement of Vostrikov and board member Dimitris Troshkov.

Despite these setbacks, the club has demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing various championships across different eras, including the 1964–65, 1971–72, 1979–80, 2007–08, and 2022–23 seasons.
