How a refusal to shave his moustache changed Indian television history
In short: Pankaj Dheer was originally intended for the role of Arjuna in the epic Mahabharat. However, his decision to keep his moustache led to a casting shift that would define his career, turning him into a household name and a cultural icon across India.
Born on 9 November 1956 in Punjab, Pankaj Dheer's career began with the 1981 film Poonam, which struggled at the box office. Despite this slow start in Hindi cinema, he eventually secured a career-defining role in B. R. Chopra's epic television series, Mahabharat. While he was initially considered for the role of Arjuna, his refusal to shave off his moustache resulted in him being cast as Karna instead. Following his debut in Poonam, he appeared in several minor roles. This period of small parts preceded his massive breakthrough in the epic series.
The portrayal of Karna became the definitive highlight of Dheer's career, elevating him to national fame. His impact was so profound that his likeness was used in textbooks as a reference for the character, and statues of him as Karna are worshipped in temples located in Karnal and Bastar. This success transformed him into a sought-after performer for both television and film. This widespread recognition made him a highly requested actor for various productions. His popularity spanned both television and cinema.
Dheer's versatility saw him move through diverse genres, from the horror anthology Zee Horror Show in 1993 to the fantasy series Chandrakanta in 1994, where he played King Shivdutt. He also ventured into directing with the 2014 romantic comedy-drama My Father Godfather and established the Abbhinnay Acting Academy in Mumbai in 2010. On 15 October 2025, Dheer died aged 68 following a battle with cancer. His filmography included roles in action movies like Nishana and Pardesi. He also worked in Kannada cinema alongside Vishnuvardhan.
