The predator who conquered South American football across two decades
In short: From a controversial transfer dispute in Lima to becoming the highest goalscorer in Peruvian history, Paolo Guerrero’s career is a saga of clinical finishing and immense resilience. Known as 'el Depredador,' he has navigated club conflicts, doping suspensions, and extreme longevity to remain a continental icon.
Born in Lima in 1984, Guerrero’s rise began with a legal battle between Alianza Lima and Bayern Munich. After the German giants signed him in 2002, FIFA ruled that Bayern must pay for training rights because his existing contract with Alianza was not professional. This early friction preceded a career defined by high-stakes performance, including a legendary stint at Hamburger SV where he scored 47 goals across eight Bundesliga seasons.
His peak years arrived in Brazil, where he achieved iconic status with Corinthians. In 2012, he scored the winning header in the FIFA Club World Cup final against Chelsea, earning the tournament's Bronze Ball. His impact was so profound that he became the highest-scoring foreign player in Corinthians history, surpassing Argentina's Carlos Tevez with 47 goals. His prowess earned him the title of 'best centre forward in America' from El País in both 2012 and 2017.
Guerrero’s national team legacy is equally storied. With 40 goals in 128 matches, he is Peru's all-time leading scorer. He has been a talismanic figure in six Copas América, leading Peru to third-place finishes in 2011 and 2015, and a runner-up spot in 2019. Even as he entered his 40s, his ability to perform remained intact; in April 2025, at age 41, he became the oldest player to score twice in the Copa Libertadores.
However, his path was not without turbulence. He faced a significant FIFA ban following a positive anti-doping test, which sidelined him during critical periods for Flamengo. He also dealt with the personal strain of extortion threats against his family, which led to his departure from Universidad César Vallejo in 2024. Despite these setbacks, his return to Alianza Lima in 2024 reaffirmed his enduring status in South American football.
