In short: In 1939, a silver coin was placed in a cradle in the Kingdom of Mysore with a vow that would shape Kannada cinema. That coin marked the beginning of Parvathamma Rajkumar’s journey from a village girl to a powerhouse producer who launched three sons into stardom.

Born in 1939 in Saligrama, Parvathamma Rajkumar was the second of eight children. A peculiar family prediction shaped her path: her uncle, Singanallur Puttaswamaiah, allegedly swore she would marry into his family after depositing a silver coin within her cradle. This destiny materialized when she married his son, the legendary matinée idol Dr. Rajkumar, in 1953 at the age of 14. Together, they formed a formidable cultural partnership that would define the Kannada film industry for decades. As a producer under the banner of Poornima Enterprises (also known as Sri Vajreshwari Combines), Parvathamma was instrumental in establishing a family legacy. She produced over 80 films by 2012, beginning with the success of Trimurthi. Beyond her own productions, she was a key architect in the careers of her three sons—Shiva Rajkumar, Raghavendra Rajkumar, and Puneeth Rajkumar—launching each as a leading star. Her influence extended to the wider industry, where she championed the rights of the Kannada film industry and advocated for regional interests in interstate water disputes. The Government of Karnataka bestowed a lifetime achievement award upon her, alongside the prestigious Kannada Rajyotsava, to acknowledge her work. She also received the Padmabhushan Dr. B. Saroja Devi National Award in 2016. Even as she faced personal tragedy—including the deaths of her husband in 2006 and her youngest son in 2021—she remained a pillar of the industry until her passing in 2017. Her life serves as a study in how personal lineage and industrial vision can converge to create a lasting cultural institution.
