In short: Born into a cinematic dynasty as the son of matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar, Shiva Rajkumar has spent over three decades defining Kannada film history. From his 1986 breakout in Anand to his recent Tamil debut, his prolific career spans more than 125 films and multiple industry awards.

Shiva Rajkumar, born Nagaraju Shiva Puttaswamy on 12 July 1962, has become a cornerstone of the Kannada film industry. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Madras University in 1983 and training in Kuchipudi dance, he transitioned from child roles in films like Dhoomakethu (1968) and Sri Srinivasa Kalyana (1974) to leading man status. His 1986 debut in the romance Anand, produced by his mother Parvathamma, was a major success that earned him the Cinema Express Award for Best Actor. He is the eldest of five children. His family includes his brother, actor Puneeth.

His rapid ascent in the late 1980s earned him the nickname 'Hat-trick Hero' following the commercial triumphs of Anand, Ratha Sapthami (1986), and Manamecchida Hudugi (1987). The 1990s marked his era of superstardom, catalyzed by the cult gangster-drama Om (1995). This role earned him his first Karnataka State Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor, cementing his status as a powerhouse in the industry. He secured his second Karnataka State Film Award for the film Hrudaya Hrudaya. His performance in A. K. 47 also earned him a third Filmfare Award.

Beyond his acting, Rajkumar has expanded into television and production, including the talk show Naaniruvude Nimagagi. While he has primarily worked in Kannada cinema, his recent years have seen him expand his reach with cameo appearances in Telugu and Tamil films, such as Jailer (2023). He remains a highly consistent presence at the box office, with his 2024 film Bhairathi Ranagal being noted as the first prequel in Kannada cinema history. He has also served as a brand ambassador for Nandini milk products. Additionally, he was the first person to own a Maruti 800 in 1983.
