From Champions League heartbreak to managerial success in South America
In short: Mauricio Pellegrino has experienced the highest highs and lowest lows of football. After missing a decisive penalty in a Champions League final, the Argentine defender transitioned into a manager, navigating the pressures of the Premier League and leading clubs through intense continental battles.
Born in Leones, Córdoba, on 5 October 1971, Pellegrino spent much of the 1990s as a key defender for Vélez Sarsfield. During this era, the Buenos Aires club enjoyed a golden age, securing four Primeira División championships and major international trophies, including the 1994 Intercontinental Cup and the Copa Libertadores. Known by the nickname 'El Flaco' due to his physique, Pellegrino's career eventually took him to Spain, where he became a staple of La Liga.
His time in Spain was defined by his tenure at Valencia, where he made 213 official appearances. He was part of a highly successful era, winning two league titles and the 2003–04 UEFA Cup. However, his career also faced significant setbacks, most notably during the 2001 UEFA Champions League final, where he missed the final penalty in a shootout against Bayern Munich. He also experienced a brief, six-month stint at Liverpool in 2005, becoming the club's first Argentine player, though he was unable to feature in their Champions League victory over AC Milan.
Pellegrino transitioned to management after retiring in 2006, a path that has seen him lead clubs across several continents. His managerial journey includes a historic run to the 2017 Copa del Rey final with Alavés and a challenging spell at Southampton in the Premier League. More recently, he has returned to his roots in Argentina, managing clubs like Vélez Sarsfield and Lanús, where he achieved a significant victory in the Sudamericana against Brazil's Atlético Mineiro in November 2025.
