In short: In 2020, professional wrestling faced an existential crisis due to the pandemic. From a bio-secure bubble in Orlando, one event fundamentally altered the landscape of the sport, initiating a record-breaking reign that would redefine a title's legacy for years to come.

The 2020 Payback event was a pivotal moment for WWE, occurring on August 30 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. To maintain operations, the promotion utilized the 'ThunderDome,' a bio-secure bubble at Orlando's Amway Center. This setup replaced live audiences with virtual fans displayed on nearly 1,000 LED boards, mixing arena audio with digital chants to simulate a traditional atmosphere. The production moved from a smaller facility in Orlando just one week before this date. This new venue allowed for special effects to enhance wrestler entrances. The event featured eight total matches including a pre-show.

The event was structurally unique; it was the first Payback to feature multiple brands (Raw and SmackDown) during a brand split, following the discontinuation of brand-exclusive PPVs in April 2018. It also marked a significant departure from tradition as the only Payback held in August, whereas previous iterations typically occurred between April and June. This specific iteration was the first Payback since 2017. It also served as the final time the show livestreamed on the American WWE Network before its merger with Peacock in April 2021.

The main event served as a catalyst for history: Roman Reigns defeated 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman to begin his second Universal Championship reign. This specific reign lasted 1,316 days, ending on April 7, 2024. It stands as the longest Universal Championship reign in history and the longest WWE championship reign since 1988. Reigns won this title after a five-month hiatus from the ring. He had previously turned heel for the first time since 2014 during an attack at SummerSlam. This victory was confirmed despite him initially refusing to sign a contract with producer Adam Pearce.

The legacy of this reign concluded with a permanent shift in branding. The Universal Championship ceased to exist formally once Reigns forfeited it during WrestleMania XL. It was replaced by the Undisputed WWE Championship, effectively ending an era that began on the night of Payback 2020. The championship was retired in favor of the new title after Reigns lost it at WrestleMania XL Night 2. Before this change, he held both titles simultaneously as the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship starting in April 2022.
