In short: From the brink of financial ruin in 1990 to major silverware in 2014, PEC Zwolle's history is a rollercoaster of identity shifts and dramatic resurrections. This Dutch club has navigated bankruptcies, name changes, and record-breaking victories to remain a fixture in the Netherlands' footballing landscape.

The identity of PEC Zwolle is defined by a significant rebirth. The original club, formed on 12 June 1910 through a merger of Prins Hendrik and Ende Desespereert Nimmer, went bankrupt in March 1990. This collapse led to the immediate creation of a successor club named FC Zwolle, which operated under that name until 14 April 2012, when it officially reverted to the original PEC Zwolle name following promotion.

The club's history is marked by intense local rivalry. In the early days, Zwolle was a three-club city: ZAC represented high society, Zwolsche Boys represented the working class, and PEC served the local middle class. This social divide fueled competition, particularly between PEC and Zwolsche Boys, who eventually merged in 1969 before the club transitioned to the name PEC Zwolle in 1971 to promote the city's image.

Financial volatility has been a recurring theme. In 1982, the club faced a debt of six million guilders, prompting Marten Eibrink to take control and restructure the club as PEC Zwolle '82. While the club achieved significant success, such as winning the KNVB Cup in 2014 and reaching the UEFA Europa League, it has also faced periods of decline, including relegation to the second division in 2022 and a record-breaking 13–0 victory in the Eerste Divisie in 2023.

The club's physical home has also evolved. The original stadium, built in 1934, was demolished in 2007 to make way for a new facility. The first goal in the new stadium was scored by Bram van Polen on 22 August 2008, and the ground was officially named the IJsseldelta Stadion on 12 July 2012.
