From American Samoa to NFL stardom: the rise of Penei Sewell
In short: Born in a small Samoan village, Penei Sewell's journey to becoming an NFL powerhouse is a testament to familial ambition. After his father moved the family to Utah to chase professional football dreams, Sewell rose through the college ranks to become one of the most dominant offensive tackles in the league.
Penei Sewell's ascent began in Malaeimi, American Samoa, where he first played football alongside his three brothers. Recognizing the potential for his children to reach the NFL, his father, Gabriel, moved the family to St. George, Utah, in 2012. This strategic move paved the way for Sewell's high school success at Desert Hills, leading to a standout collegiate career with the Oregon Ducks.
During his time at the University of Oregon, Sewell established himself as a premier talent. In 2019, he achieved the rare distinction of winning both the Outland and Morris trophies. That same year, he was named the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year alongside Tua Tagovailoa. Despite a high ankle sprain during his 2018 freshman season, he became an immediate starter for the Ducks.
Sewell entered the NFL in 2021 as a highly touted prospect, selected seventh overall by the Detroit Lions. He made history during his debut against the San Francisco 49ers as the youngest player ever to start at left tackle. His professional career has been defined by elite consistency and accolades, including multiple First-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections. A huge $112 million extension spanning four years secured his place with the Lions until 2029, cementing his worth by 2024.
His dominance is reflected in advanced metrics and peer recognition. Pro Football Focus graded him as the best tackle in the NFL in both 2023 and 2025. His impact is further evidenced by his high ranking in the NFL Top 100 Players, placing 22nd in 2024 and 13th in 2025 according to his fellow players.
