In short: Originally a simple supporting character, Pepper Potts has transformed from Tony Stark's secretary into a powerful hero. Through accidental cyborg enhancements and high-tech armor, her journey has spanned from fixing accounting errors to leading global corporations and fighting alongside the Avengers.

Created by Stan Lee, Robert Bernstein, and artist Don Heck, Pepper Potts first appeared in Tales of Suspense #45 in September 1963. Initially depicted as a member of a secretarial pool who secured her position by correcting an accounting error made by Tony Stark, her role was primarily that of a supporting character and love interest. Her early history was marked by a complex relationship dynamic involving Stark and his assistant, Happy Hogan, with the two eventually marrying in Tales of Suspense #91.

The character's physical identity has undergone significant shifts. Her original design was modeled after Ann B. Davis's character Schultzy from The Bob Cummings Show, but this was later altered to give her red hair. Her most dramatic transformation occurred after a terrorist explosion caused by Ezekiel "Zeke" Stane left her with severe internal injuries. To save her life, Tony Stark embedded a non-weaponized electromagnetic magnet from Rand Industries into her chest, turning her into a cyborg.

This implant granted her abilities beyond mere survival, including enhanced strength, durability, and the ability to sense and manipulate electromagnetic fields to levitate. Beyond her biological changes, she has also operated under the moniker Rescue, utilizing the Mark 1616 armor. This suit combines repulsor technology with portable electromagnetic super-field generators, allowing her to perform feats as significant as stopping a falling jet airliner without physical contact.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character has been portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow across several films, including Iron Man (2008) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Her legacy remains a cornerstone of the Iron Man mythos, evolving from a civilian assistant into a formidable figure capable of managing Stark Industries and fighting alongside superheroes.
