From rejecting giants to ending a 17-year trophy drought
In short: Pedro Porro's path to the top wasn't a straight line. He turned down three of Europe's biggest clubs before finding his footing. Now, he is a key architect for Spain's World Cup glory and a trophy-winning hero for Tottenham Hotspur.
Born in Don Benito in 1999, Porro's professional journey began with a bold choice. In 2017, he famously turned down offers from Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Bayern Munich to join Girona. His early career was defined by a nomadic path; he moved to Manchester City in 2019 for £11 million but spent his formative years on loan at Real Valladolid and Sporting CP. It was in Portugal where he truly flourished, becoming a mainstay for Sporting, where he helped the club secure the Primeira Liga title and multiple Taças da Liga trophies.
Porro's evolution as a defender is marked by consistent individual accolades. During his time at Sporting, he was named the Primeira Liga Defender of the Month four times and earned a spot in the Team of the Year for two consecutive seasons (2020–21 and 2021–22). His ability to contribute offensively was highlighted by a goal against Borussia Dortmund in 2021 that secured Champions League qualification for his side, as well as a strike in early 2021 voted as the league's Goal of the Month.
His move to Tottenham Hotspur in early 2023 initially faced skepticism, with some critics labeling his early performances as poor. However, he quickly silenced doubters by becoming a vital component of the squad. By May 2025, he played a pivotal role in securing the UEFA Europa League title, ending a long period of silverware for the club. On the international stage, Porro reached the pinnacle in 2026, helping Spain win the FIFA World Cup, where he was named Man of the Match in a semi-final victory over France.
