A $50 million deal to bring elite rugby league to Western Australia

The road to the Perth Bears was paved with failed bids and identity crises. In 2024, a consortium of Western Australian businessmen attempted to launch the 'Western Bears.' However, the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) rejected their $20 million proposal, citing insufficient funding. The NRL's preferred strategy was not a standalone expansion but an alignment with an existing brand: the North Sydney Bears, a foundation club that left the top flight in 1999.
The breakthrough occurred in early 2025. Following a period of stalled negotiations, the Western Australian Government reached a landmark $50 million agreement with the NRL. This deal was part of a larger commitment totaling $85.6 million, which includes $35 million for grassroots development, $20 million for a Centre of Excellence, and significant investments in content and infrastructure. To ensure a clear geographical identity, the NRL officially renamed the project from 'Western Bears' to 'Perth Bears,' distancing it from the failed 2024 bid.
The new club carries the visual DNA of its partner, utilizing the traditional red and black colors of North Sydney. While the Perth Bears will be the elite face of the franchise, the original North Sydney Bears will continue to compete in the second-tier NSW Cup, serving as a feeder club. The expansion also establishes a unique developmental pipeline, with the Brisbane Tigers and Catalans Dragons acting as additional funnels for talent, while local development is anchored by a new academy at the Western Australian Institute of Sport.
