The ultimate peer review of football's rising stars
In short: In the high-stakes world of English football, some accolades come from fans or journalists. But the PFA Young Player of the Year is different. It is a badge of honor bestowed by the players themselves, marking the most impactful talent judged by those who share the pitch.
Established during the 1973–74 season, this award serves as a barometer for the next generation of elite talent. Unlike many trophies decided by public opinion or media panels, the winner is selected via a vote among the members of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA). This peer-to-peer recognition gives the honor a unique weight; for the athletes, it represents a validation of their skill and influence by the very professionals they compete against daily.
The criteria for 'young' have shifted over the decades to maintain the award's integrity. While the age limit was once set at 23—a threshold that drew criticism for allowing 24-year-olds to be labeled as youth—it was lowered to 21 as of July 1, 2021. Despite being open to all levels of the game, the award has historically been a showcase for the top flight. It wasn't until 2018 that Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham broke the mold as the first nominee from outside the highest division.
The scarcity of the trophy is reflected in its history. As of 2026, the award has been presented 53 times to 47 different winners. Only a handful of names, including icons like Wayne Rooney and Phil Foden, have managed to secure the title more than once. Additionally, the prize is largely a UK-based accolade; just seven non-British recipients have claimed it, which differs significantly from the 20 recipients of the primary PFA Players' Player of the Year prize.
The selection process begins with a shortlist published every April, culminating in a gala event in London. While the award is distinct, it often intersects with other major honors like the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year or the Premier League Player of the Season. On three specific occasions, a single player was exceptional enough to sweep both the Young Player and the main Players' Player of the Year awards in a single season.
