From a one-and-done prospect to an NBA champion and rising star
In short: Peyton Watson entered the NBA with high expectations but faced an uncertain start. After a turbulent freshman year at UCLA, he navigated trades, injuries to teammates, and a controversial decision to skip the playoffs to protect his future.
Peyton Watson's ascent to the NBA was marked by early brilliance and significant transitions. A standout at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, Watson earned Moore League MVP honors after averaging 23.2 points and eight rebounds per game in his junior season. By 2021, he was a consensus five-star recruit and the highest-ranked player from California in his class. He committed to UCLA on July 27, 2020, explicitly informing coaches of his intention to leave for the professional ranks after just one year.
His transition to college was difficult. Arriving at UCLA for the 2021–22 season, Watson struggled with fitness due to pandemic-related disruptions to his senior high school year. His freshman stats were modest, averaging 3.3 points and 2.9 rebounds, with shooting percentages as low as 22.6% from three-point range. However, his defensive capabilities were already evident. Following this season, he was selected 30th overall in the 2022 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, before being traded to the Denver Nuggets.
Watson's role expanded dramatically during the 2025–26 season. While playing alongside superstars like Nikola Jokić, Watson stepped up during periods when core players like Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun were sidelined. During a stretch where Jokić missed 15 games, Watson averaged 2,2.1 points per game. His breakout continued with a 35-point performance against the Washington Wizards on January 22, 2026. Despite this momentum, his agent, Rich Paul, famously opted to keep him out of the 2026 playoffs to preserve his health for free agency, a move that reportedly frustrated his Nuggets teammates. In August 2026, Watson moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers on an $88 million, four-year contract.
