From a single practice room to a multi-label powerhouse
In short: Pledis Entertainment began with nothing but a single practice room and a vision for the stars. Today, it is a cornerstone of the global K-pop landscape, navigating complex corporate shifts, high-profile acquisitions, and the launch of new labels while maintaining its distinct artistic identity.
Founded in 2007 by Han Sung-soo, Pledis Entertainment initially operated with minimal infrastructure, lacking even permanent management premises. The agency's first artist was Son Dam-bi, followed by the debut of the girl group After School in January 2009. The company's name is inspired by the Pleiades star cluster in the constellation Taurus, a celestial theme that has mirrored its growth from a small startup to a major industry player.
The company's trajectory was defined by strategic expansion and joint ventures. It collaborated with Fantagio to debut Hello Venus in 2012 and partnered with Chinese agency Yuehua Entertainment in 2013 to form the sub-unit NU'EST-M. These partnerships were often fluid; the Fantagio venture dissolved in July 2014, and Pledis eventually navigated a major corporate transition in May 2020 when Hybe Corporation became its majority shareholder, acquiring an 85 percent stake.
Despite the acquisition, Pledis maintained its independence as a label under the Hybe Labels umbrella. This era saw significant leadership changes, including Han Sung-soo stepping down as CEO in March 2022 and the appointment of Kim Yeon Soo as CEO in November 2024. The company continues to evolve through restructuring, such as the 2026 creation of Pledis Music Services Co., Ltd. and the launch of the subsidiary label ABD, which debuted the girl group Tuide in August 2026.
Pledis's legacy is anchored by long-term artist retention and brand evolution. The group Seventeen has renewed its contract twice, most recently in July 2026. The company also emphasizes social responsibility, notably through the 'Happy Pledis' album series launched in December 2010, which donated proceeds to charities like Save the Children and UNICEF. In August 2025, the company rebranded with a new logo symbolizing 'Performance becomes the Pulse,' highlighting its commitment to diverse artistic rhythms.
