In short: Founded in 1973 by the POSCO steel company, the Pohang Steelers have evolved from a 13-player semi-professional side into one of South Korea's most successful clubs, boasting five K League titles and three AFC Champions League trophies.

The club's identity is deeply intertwined with its industrial roots in Pohang's North Gyeongsang Province. Originally established as Pohang Iron & Steel Company FC, the team's original kit was orange to represent the color of hot metal during the steelmaking process. While the club has undergone several rebrands—including the Pohang Iron & Steel Dolphins and the Pohang Atoms—it eventually adopted its current name, the Pohang Steelers, in 1997 to strengthen local ties.

The Steelers' success is marked by periods of intense dominance and surprising resilience. Between 1985 and 1998, the club maintained a continuous presence in the top four of the K League. They achieved a historic domestic double in 2013 under manager Hwang Sun-hong, who implemented a unique playstyle known as 'Steel Taka'. This era of success was punctuated by continental triumphs, including winning the Asian Champions Cup in both 1997 and 1998, and a third title in the 2009 AFC Champions League.

Infrastructure has played a vital role in their professional evolution. In 1990, they opened the Pohang Steel Yard, South Korea's first football-specific stadium. They furthered their professional edge in 2001 by completing the Songna Clubhouse, making them the first club in the South Korean professional league to possess their own dedicated clubhouse. More recently, in 2019, they invested 2 billion won into the Steelers Football Performance Center to enhance player fitness and injury prevention.

Despite facing trophy droughts as rivals like Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors rose to prominence, the club remains a powerhouse. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2023 by winning the FA Cup, and followed that up by winning the rebranded Korea Cup in 2024 with a 3–1 victory over rivals Ulsan HD.
