How a stunt double rose from the shadows to master the Tamil screen
In short: Before he was a celebrated director, Prabhu Solomon spent his early years in the film industry as a stunt double. His journey from the cinema halls of Neyveli to directing high-budget, visually ambitious epics like Kayal is a masterclass in persistence and creative adaptation.
Born on 7 May 1969, Prabhu Solomon’s path to the director's chair was anything but linear. After studying English literature, he moved to Chennai and spent three years seeking opportunities in the industry. His early roles were far from the director's chair; in 1994, he worked as a stunt double for actor Sarathkumar in the film Namma Annachi. This role led to vital connections, including meeting director Sundar C, for whom Solomon later served as an assistant director on Murai Maman in 199<0xC2>5.
Solomon’s directorial career began in 1999 with Kannodu Kanbathellam. While his early ventures saw varying degrees of success—including the 2001 Kannada film Usire, which struggled due to casting choices—he eventually found a signature style. His breakthrough came in 2010 with Mynaa, a romantic film set in the Kurangani Theni district. He followed this with the massive success of Kumki, a film that also launched the career of Vikram Prabhu.
Solomon is known for his ambitious, high-stakes productions. For his film Kayal, he drew inspiration from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, conducting extensive research in Nagapattinam. The production was his most expensive to date, costing ₹15 crore, and required grueling underwater filming sessions. His later works, such as the 2021 film Kaadan and the 2022 social drama Sembi, continue to explore intense, socially relevant themes, proving his ability to evolve alongside the changing landscape of Tamil cinema.
