From the pastures of Liencres to the tactical heights of Barcelona
In short: Known as 'El Maestro' on the pitch, Quique Setién’s journey is defined by extremes. He has transitioned from a beloved midfielder for Racing de Santander to a high-stakes manager, navigating everything from Champions League defeats to the intense pressure of the Chinese Super League.
Born in Santander on 27 September 1958, Setién’s footballing identity is deeply rooted in his hometown club, Racing de Santander. His 19-year professional career as a central midfielder was marked by two significant spells with the Cantabrians, where he eventually earned the title of the club's best player of all time. Beyond his domestic success, he earned three international caps for Spain, including a selection for the 1986 FIFA World Cup squad in Mexico. He also spent three years playing for Atlético Madrid. During his time with the Cantabrians, he missed the entire 1982–83 season due to relegation struggles. He eventually retired in 1996 after playing for Levante.
Setién's tactical philosophy, which prioritizes possession and midfield domination, is influenced by his passion for chess; he holds a FIDE rating of 1965 and has played matches against legends like Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. This intellectual approach led him to the helm of Barcelona in January 2020. However, his tenure was marked by a historic 8–2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on 14 August 2020, a result that saw him dismissed three days later. His coaching journey began in 2001 when he succeeded Gustavo Benítez at Racing. He also served as an assistant coach for the Russian national beach soccer team.
His managerial career has been a global odyssey. He has coached teams across various tiers and continents, from leading Lugo to promotion in his third year to managing Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League. In China, he achieved Manager of the Month honors in May and June 2025, though his spell concluded with a resignation on 5 October for personal reasons after overseeing 32 matches. His time in China included a difficult 6–0 loss against Shandong Taishan. He also managed Polideportivo Ejido and Real Betis during his extensive career.
