From software engineering to cinema, how Raj and DK redefined modern Indian storytelling.
In short: Raj Nidimoru and Krishna Dasarakothapalli began their careers as software engineers in the United States before pivoting to filmmaking. Today, the duo is celebrated for bringing genre-bending narratives and dark humor to Indian screens, creating cult classics and record-breaking streaming hits that have fundamentally shifted the landscape of Hindi cinema.
Born in Tirupati and Chittoor, Raj Nidimoru and Krishna Dasarakothapalli met while studying at the SVU College of Engineering. Their transition from technology to film began with the 2002 short Shaadi.com and the 2003 feature Flavors, which explored the immigrant experience. Their first Hindi feature, 99 (2009), was a crime-comic-thriller that earned praise for its inventive style. They quickly followed this with Shor in the City (2011), a micro-budget production that achieved both critical acclaim and profitability, establishing their reputation for breaking norms with dark, character-driven humor.
The duo continued to experiment with genre, notably with the 2013 film Go Goa Gone, which introduced India to a unique blend of stoner comedy and horror. While subsequent projects like Happy Ending and A Gentleman faced commercial challenges, they found significant success as writers for the 2018 horror-comedy Stree. This film launched the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, demonstrating their ability to build expansive, interconnected narratives that resonate with mainstream audiences.
Their move into streaming television has been transformative. The Family Man (2019) became a critical success, blending espionage with domestic life. They followed this with the 2023 series Farzi, which became the most-watched Indian streaming series, and the Netflix crime comedy Guns & Gulaabs. Their recent work also includes the 2024 series Citadel: Honey Bunny. Beyond their own directing, they launched the D2R Indie banner in 2021 to support independent projects like Cinema Bandi, further cementing their role as influential curators and producers in the evolving Indian entertainment industry.
