From cryptic rock lyrics to a humanitarian Order of Canada
In short: Raine Maida is known for a unique nasal falsetto and poetry-influenced lyrics that defined Canadian alternative rock. But beyond the enigmatic persona of Our Lady Peace's frontman lies a prolific producer, a tech innovator in NFTs, and a humanitarian whose work has earned him a place in the Order of Canada.
Born Michael Anthony Maida in 1970, Raine began his musical journey by forming the band Our Lady Peace with guitarist Mike Turner in 1992. His early signature sound was characterized by a high, nasal voice and 'Delphic' lyrics—a style that shifted toward a deeper tone following his work with producer Bob Rock on the album Gravity. By 2001, Maida remained as the sole original member of the band after Turner's departure.
Maida’s career is marked by a transition from rock stardom to diverse creative roles. He launched a solo career in 2006 with The Hunters Lullaby, which he described as 'a collection of poems put to music.' Beyond his own performances, he has become a powerhouse producer for artists ranging from Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson to indie bands like Sleepway. This versatility extends into the tech space; in 2021, he joined S!NG as Chief Product Officer to help creators monetize work via NFTs.
Parallel to his artistic output is a deep commitment to humanitarianism. Alongside his wife, Chantal Kreviazuk, Maida has been intimately involved with War Child since 2003, traveling to Iraq and Darfur to film documentaries and producing benefit albums. His advocacy for the David Suzuki Foundation and various hospitals led to him receiving the Alan Waters Humanitarian Award from the Juno Awards. In December 2014, his contributions were officially recognized when he was appointed a member of the Order of Canada.
His personal life also reflects this collaborative spirit. Married to Kreviazuk since 1999, they have co-written for major pop acts and even documented their own marital tensions in the 2019 film I'm Going to Break Your Heart. Today, Maida balances these legacies by founding Harmony House, a music therapy retreat specifically for war veterans.
