From industrial photography to the heights of Telugu cinema
In short: Before becoming a staple of Telugu cinema, Rao Ramesh pursued a career in still-photography. After training in industrial photography in Bangalore, he transitioned from television soap operas to becoming one of the most acclaimed supporting actors in the industry.
Born on 25 May 1968, Rao Ramesh was raised in Chennai, the son of the veteran actor Rao Gopal Rao. His path to the screen was not direct; after earning a degree in Communications, he initially focused on the technical side of imagery. He worked as an assistant to cinematographer K. S. Prakasa Rao before traveling to Bangalore to master the craft of industrial photography. He attended the Sri Ramakrishna Mission School in T. Nagar during his early years. This academic foundation preceded his communications degree.
His acting career began in television, though his early efforts faced setbacks when a series directed by Ghantasala Ratna Kumar was shelved. Undeterred, he returned to Chennai and found success in soap operas like Pavithra Bandham and Kalavari Kodalu. In just four and a half years, he filmed more than 1,000 episodes, building the foundational experience that would later define his film career. His early television work began under the direction of Ghantasala Ratna Kumar. This initial production was eventually cancelled before it could air.
Ramesh's cinematic breakthrough arrived in 2008 with the film Gamyam, where he played a reformed naxalite. This role earned him significant critical acclaim and helped the film become one of the highest-grossing Telugu productions of that year. He followed this success with roles in hits like Magadheera in 2009, where his portrayal of a hunchbacked old Tantric further cemented his reputation. By 2015, Ramesh noted he had entered the most successful phase of his professional life. His filmography also includes successful titles such as Kotha Bangaru Lokam and Avakai Biryani. These early hits helped establish his presence in the industry.
