Rashaan Salaam reached the pinnacle of college football at twenty, then struggled to find himself.
In short: In 1994, Rashaan Salaam won the Heisman Trophy after a historic rushing season. Yet, his professional career was marred by injury and personal isolation. By age forty-two, the former star was found dead in a Colorado park, leaving behind a complex legacy of athletic brilliance and hidden, unresolved internal pain.
Rashaan Salaam’s ascent was meteoric. As a junior at the University of Colorado in 1994, he rushed for over 2,000 yards, securing the Heisman Trophy as the nation's most outstanding college player. He entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick for the Chicago Bears in 1995, earning NFC Rookie of the Year honors. However, his professional trajectory faltered quickly. Injuries, frequent fumbles, and struggles with marijuana use hampered his performance, leading to a fragmented career that saw him bounce between teams before his final professional stint in the XFL in 2001.
Beyond the field, Salaam grappled with the weight of his early success. Teammates noted that he became increasingly solitary, struggling to reconcile his post-football life with the immense achievements of his youth. He later admitted that he was not emotionally prepared for the pressures of professional sports at age twenty. This isolation deepened over time, culminating in his death on December 5, 2016, at age forty-two. The Boulder County Coroner’s office ruled his death a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Following his death, questions emerged regarding the potential role of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head impacts in football. While CTE is known to cause depression and impulsive behavior, Salaam’s family declined to have his brain tested. They cited their Muslim faith and burial rituals, which mandate prompt interment and forbid the desecration of the body. Although his brother, Jabali Alaji, expressed a personal conviction that Salaam suffered from the condition, the lack of medical examination leaves the definitive cause of his mental health struggles an insoluble mystery.
