A deaf prince and a shadow survivor navigate a world of magical kings
In short: In a world where a divine committee ranks the prosperity of mortal rulers, a tiny, deaf prince must prove his worth. Alongside Kage, a survivor of a wiped-out assassin clan, Bojji embarks on a journey to become a great king despite the doubts of his own royal court.
Sōsuke Tōka is the creator and artist behind the Japanese web manga Ranking of Kings. Since its debut on the Manga Hack website in May 2017, the story has grown into a significant franchise, spanning 22 tankōbon volumes published by Enterbrain and an anime television series produced by Wit Studio, which aired from October 2021 to March 2022.
The narrative centers on Bojji, a prince born deaf and tiny in size, whose right to rule is contested by his half-brother, Daida, and his stepmother, Queen Hiling. The conflict is driven by the 'Ranking of Kings' system, a mechanism used by a committee of 'Gods' to rank the power of mortal kings. The top-ranked ruler is granted a boon from the fabled Divine Treasure Vault, a stronghold filled with holy artifacts and riches.
The story explores themes of resilience and identity through Bojji's struggle to overcome physical shortcomings and social ridicule. The plot is set in motion by the death of King Bosse, a legendary giant warrior who was once the strongest man in the world. As Bojji journeys to gain strength and experience, he is accompanied by Kage, a thief who can understand Bojji's words despite the prince's inability to speak.
The complexity of the world is furthered by figures like Miranjo, a spirit sealed within a Magic Mirror, and the political maneuvering within the Kingdom of Bosse. The series has expanded beyond the initial anime to include a spin-off, Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage, which aired from April to June 2023.
