How a dyslexia diagnosis fueled a first-round NFL draft success story
In short: For Rashan Gary, a learning challenge became a powerful catalyst for excellence. From a standout high school career to becoming a first-round pick for the Green Bay Packers, his journey illustrates how personal obstacles can drive an athlete to push far beyond conventional limits.
Rashan Gary's ascent to the professional stage began with a high school career defined by dominance. During his senior season, he recorded 13.5 sacks and 55 tackles, earning him the title of USA Today Defensive Player of the Year. Reflecting a wider pattern of greatness, he stood as the third athlete to receive unanimous top-recruit status from every major network: 247Sports.com, ESPN.com, Rivals.com, and Scout.com.
At the University of Michigan, Gary became a cornerstone of the Wolverines' defense. His 2017 season was particularly notable, setting career highs with 58 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss. Despite facing a shoulder injury during his 2018 campaign that limited his playing time, his talent remained undeniable. This led him to forgo his senior year to enter the 2019 NFL draft, where he was selected 12th overall by the Green Bay Packers.
Gary's professional career has been marked by both high-level production and physical resilience. After signing a four-year, $15.88 million rookie contract in May 2019, he established himself as a disruptive force, ranking 9th among the ten most disruptive defenders in 2020. Even after a significant ACL tear in November 2022, he returned to achieve a career-high 9.5 sacks in 2021 and a three-sack performance in 2023. His sustained impact eventually led to a massive four-year, $107 million contract extension with the Packers in October 2023.
In March 2026, Gary transitioned to the Dallas Cowboys in a trade involving a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.
