In short: In professional football, punters are rarely the stars. Ray Guy was the exception. Widely considered the greatest of all time, his ability to pin opponents deep and keep balls hanging in the air was so dominant that coaches even suspected he was using helium-inflated footballs.

Ray Guy was a generational talent who redefined the role of the punter. During his career with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, he became a primary weapon for the team, winning three Super Bowls. Joe Horrigan, a Pro Football Hall of Fame historian, observed that Guy's influence was so deep he was the first punter capable of winning games.

His dominance was reflected in unprecedented statistics. Guy averaged 44.7 yards per punt, a school record at the University of Southern Mississippi, and maintained a career average of 42.4 yards. He earned eight All-Pro honours and seven Pro Bowl selections, including six straight years between 1973 and 1978. His precision was legendary; he recorded 210 punts inside the 20-yard line, though this figure excludes his first three seasons when the NFL did not track the metric.

Guy's skill was so unusual that it sparked controversy. In 1977, Houston Oilers coach Bum Phillips accused the Raiders of using illegally inflated helium footballs because Guy's kicks seemed to hang in the air too long. Despite the suspicions, Guy's legacy remained untarnished. On August 2, 2014, he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the inaugural pure punter to receive this distinction. As of 2024, he remains the only player at his position in the Hall of Fame.

Beyond his kicking, Guy was a versatile athlete. At Thomson High School, he was a four-sport star in football, basketball, baseball, and track. At the collegiate level, he was a starting safety who set a school record with eight interceptions in a single season, and he even served as the Raiders' emergency quarterback.
