In short: Before she was a mainstay on the Billboard Hot 100, Ravyn Lenae was a student of classical music and a member of a South Side Chicago congregation. Discover how a background in worship and a $300 studio session fueled a genre-defying rise to stardom.

Born in Chicago on January 22, 1999, Ravyn Lenae Washington's musical foundations were laid in the Pullman Christian Reformed Church. The daughter of a Panamanian mother, she was raised in a community led by her maternal grandfather, Richard Williams, who served as pastor for 30 years. This early exposure to worship helped shape her musical abilities, which she later refined through classical studies at the Chicago High School for the Arts, graduating in May 2017.

Her professional journey began with significant independent grit. As a high school sophomore, she invested $300 into a studio session that produced her first single, "Greetings." By 2015, she was a key figure in the Zero Fatigue collective alongside Monte Booker and Smino. While her early work like the Moon Shoes EP was initially released as a free download, her talent soon caught the attention of major players, leading to a 2016 signing with Atlantic Records.

Lenae's artistry is noted for its refusal to stay within a single lane, blending R&B, pop, dance, rock, and even reggae. While her debut album, Hypnos, showcased a wide array of collaborators like Steve Lacy and Kaytranada, her sophomore effort, Bird's Eye, saw her expanding into downtempo guitar and experimental production. Her breakthrough into the mainstream was propelled by the viral success of "Love Me Not," a track that found new life on TikTok through a mash-up with Solange, eventually peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Today, her discography continues to evolve, with recent releases like Blue Island and singles featuring artists such as Dominic Fike and Childish Gambino, cementing her transition from an underground favorite to a global performer.
