A guardian deity enters a courtroom to fight systemic corruption
In short: In the 2026 Tamil fantasy drama Karuppu, a divine protector takes a surprising human form. Disguised as a lawyer, the deity Vettai Karuppu enters the legal system to battle corruption and seek justice for a family robbed of their life-saving funds.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu follows the story of Binu and her father, Mattancherry Sukumaran. While traveling from Kerala to Chennai for a critical liver transplant, the pair is robbed of 60 sovereigns of gold. When the police return only 45 sovereigns, the family is forced into a predatory legal battle against Baby Kannan, a powerful and corrupt advocate who exploits their desperation for profit. The duo's struggle intensifies when they are forced to file a Return of Property petition to recover their stolen wealth. This legal necessity highlights the systemic barriers faced by the victims.
To combat this injustice, Sukumaran prays to Vettai Karuppu, the guardian deity of the Seven Wells. The deity intervenes by manifesting as Saravanan, a newly transferred advocate. As Saravanan, the deity navigates a web of legal manipulation and bribery, eventually forcing the corrupt Baby Kannan to face the truth through divine intervention. This supernatural presence begins to cleanse the Seven Wells of crime, ensuring old cases are resolved and new crimes are prevented. The deity's presence eventually extends its influence beyond the courtroom, as the divine intervention begins to cleanse the entire Seven Wells region of criminal activity. This transformation ensures that justice is served for many long-standing cases.
The film's production was complex, involving multiple locations from Pollachi to Hyderabad's Ramoji Film City. Originally announced under the tentative title Suriya 45, the project saw significant changes, including a replacement of the initial composer, A. R. Rahman, with Sai Abhyankkar. Despite a brief delay in its May 2026 release due to unforeseen circumstances, the film became a massive box-office success and the highest-grossing film of Suriya's career. The production faced several hurdles, including the need for reshoots for certain climax sequences despite the film being initially locked. Additionally, the project's official title was only revealed in June 2025.
