The rise and fall of a consensus All-American linebacker
In short: Reuben Foster was once heralded as the premier linebacker prospect in his class. From winning the Butkus Award at Alabama to being a first-round NFL pick, his talent was undeniable. However, a series of legal controversies and injuries transformed his career from a projected superstar into a cautionary tale of professional volatility.
Reuben Foster's ascent through the ranks of football was nothing short of meteoric. After a dominant high school career at Troup County and Auburn High, he arrived at the University of Alabama. By his senior year in 2016, he was recognized as the nation's best linebacker, earning the prestigious Butkus Award and being named a midseason All-American by outlets including Sports Illustrated and USA Today. He had previously switched his college commitment from Alabama to Auburn before ultimately returning to the Crimson Tide for his collegiate career. This decision had even triggered a formal investigation by the NCAA.
His professional trajectory began with high expectations when the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. He signed a four-year, $9.03 million contract, including $6.87 million in guarantees. Despite an All-Rookie Team selection, his time in San Francisco was cut short by a series of legal issues, including a suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy and a subsequent arrest for domestic violence in November 2018. His departure from the 49ers followed comments from head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding the difficulty of trusting him. This followed an earlier suspension for a weapons offence and a misdemeanor drug charge.
The instability continued when the Washington Redskins claimed him off waivers in late 2018, a move met with significant criticism. While an internal NFL investigation later found no evidence to support his suspension, Foster faced a grueling period of injuries, including a torn ACL and LCL in 2019. His professional journey eventually led him to the USFL's Pittsburgh Maulers in 2023, where he appeared in eight games before the team folded during the XFL and USFL merger. During his stint with the Maulers, he recorded an interception and a forced fumble. This marked his first professional football action since 2018.
