How a childhood bond dissolves into a cycle of betrayal and survival
In short: In the 2024 Tamil action drama Garudan, a lifelong loyalty is tested by greed and murder. What begins as a story of gratitude between an orphan and his protector spirals into a violent struggle over temple lands and stolen jewels, proving that even the deepest bonds can be broken by power.
Set in Kombai, Theni, the film follows Sokkan, an orphan whose life was changed when he was taken in by Karuna out of gratitude for saving him from danger. This foundational bond serves as the emotional core of the narrative, which centers on the complex relationship between Sokkan and his childhood friends, Aadhi and Karuna. The trio grew up under the watchful eye of Sellayee, who managed the local temple's trustee committee. Karuna, a zamin heir, maintains a modest lifestyle through his brick kiln business.
The tension escalates when political and financial greed enter the fray. Thangapandi, the Registration Department Minister, seeks to usurp temple land worth ₹330 crores. This scheme involves a conspiracy to replace temple jewellery with fakes and the murder of Sellayee, the head of the temple's trustee committee. As the plot unfolds, Karuna's actions shift from loyalty to betrayal, eventually leading to the brutal murder of Aadhi. Nagaraj, a relative of the minister, attempts to seize control of the temple committee. This scheme is further complicated by Vairavel, who manipulates Karuna's wife and brother-in-law through their greed.
The film's resolution hinges on the tension between justice and survival. While Sokkan attempts to protect Aadhi's family, he is caught between his loyalty to Karuna and the truth of Karuna's crimes. Ultimately, the cycle of violence concludes when Sokkan is forced to fight back against Karuna to save others, leading to a final, fatal confrontation in a brick kiln. The conflict reaches a peak when Sokkan kills Nagaraj and Vairavel before surrendering to the police. He eventually escapes custody to confront Karuna at his brick kiln.
Directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar and starring Soori, M. Sasikumar, and Unni Mukundan, the film received positive critical reception for its intense rural drama and performances. It has since been remade in Telugu under the title Bhairavam. The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. It was released on streaming platforms via Amazon Prime Video in July 2024.
