Arian Foster went from undrafted free agent to NFL rushing leader in one season
In short: After a collegiate career marked by mixed results and a plummeting draft stock, Arian Foster defied expectations to become a dominant force in the NFL. He set franchise records for the Houston Texans and became the first undrafted player to lead the league in rushing yards, yet later questioned his path.
Born in 1986 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Arian Foster was encouraged to play football by his mother at age seven, despite his father’s reservations as a former player. Foster’s path to the NFL was unconventional; after a collegiate career at the University of Tennessee where he became the school's second all-time leading rusher, he went undrafted in 2009. Scouts were reportedly concerned about his pass-blocking, ball security, and perceived coachability, leading him to sign with the Houston Texans as a free agent.
Foster’s breakout came in the 2010 season, where he rushed for 1,616 yards, leading the league and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He became a cornerstone of the Texans' offense, signing a deal worth up to $43.5 million in 2012. His performance was characterized by explosive production, including becoming the third-fastest player to reach 5,000 yards from scrimmage in 2012. However, his career was frequently interrupted by significant injuries, including a ruptured lumbar disk in 2013 and a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2015.
Following his release from the Texans in 2016 and a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins, Foster retired in October 2016. Reflecting on his career in 2017, he expressed regret over his choice of profession, citing the physical toll and the pressures of fame. Beyond athletics, Foster maintained creative interests, including poetry and acting, eventually performing as a guest star on Hawaii Five-0. His legacy remains defined by his rapid ascent from an undrafted rookie to a four-time Pro Bowl nominee and a record-setting running back.
