How an unsuccessful USFL tryout led to a Super Bowl victory
In short: In 1983, Rich Bisaccia decided to abandon his playing career after a failed tryout with the Philadelphia Stars. Instead of walking away from football, he pivoted to coaching, eventually guiding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their first Super Bowl title in 2002.
Bisaccia's coaching journey began at Wayne State College in 1983, where he worked under Pete Chapman. After building a foundation in collegiate coaching—including stints at the University of South Carolina and Ole Miss—he moved into the professional ranks. His expertise in special teams and running backs eventually made him a vital asset for high-profile NFL franchises. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education while working at Wayne State. His early roles involved coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers.
A career highlight arrived in 2002 when Bisaccia served as the special teams coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Under head coach Jon Gruden, the team secured its first Super Bowl title, defeating the Oakland Raiders with a decisive 48–21 victory. He made a significant mark in Tampa Bay; during 2007, his squad assisted Micheal Spurlock in becoming the club's inaugural player to score via a kickoff return, breaking a 32-season drought. He later held assistant head coach duties alongside his special teams responsibilities. This role continued through his tenure in 2009.
Bisaccia has also proven his ability to lead under pressure. In 2021, following the resignation of Jon Gruden, he was named interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. He led the team to a 7–5 record and a postseason berth, becoming the first interim head coach since Bruce Arians and the 2012 Indianapolis Colts to achieve such a result. Today, he continues his career as the special teams coordinator at Clemson University. He achieved this feat during his lone season leading the squad. His leadership helped the franchise reach the playoffs.
