The teenage prodigy who turned down a record-breaking payday
In short: In 2009, a rugby league teenager became the sport's most expensive signing. But the real story isn't just the £200,000 contract—it is the massive offer he walked away from to chase a different path, choosing a new club over becoming the highest-paid player in his original team's history.
Richard David Myler’s ascent through professional rugby league was marked by unprecedented financial stakes. After starting his career with the Widnes Vikings in 2007, Myler moved to Salford in 2008. His impact was immediate; he scored 25 tries in 32 appearances, helping Salford secure the National League One title and earning the Co-Operative Player of the Year award.
The defining moment of his early career arrived in 2009. A mere adolescent, Myler joined Warrington Wolves on a four-year agreement valued at roughly £200,000, setting a record for the costliest youth acquisition in the sport's history. However, the move was controversial. According to agent Martin Offiah, Myler was offered a contract at Widnes that would have made him their highest-paid player ever, but he chose to reject the deal in favor of the Warrington move.
Myler's career was characterized by high-profile transitions and international representation. He played for several major clubs, including the Catalans Dragons and Leeds Rhinos, and achieved significant milestones such as winning the Lance Todd Trophy for his performance in the 2020 Challenge Cup Final. While he represented England at the senior level and the England Knights, he also declared for Ireland in 2022, qualifying through his grandfather.
After a long career that included a 400th appearance for York Knights in March 2024, Myler announced his retirement in April 2024 following an elbow injury. He has since transitioned into coaching, serving as the director of rugby for Hull FC.
